Leanpath Introduces AI-Powered Food Waste Prevention Coaching

Global food waste prevention leader Leanpath is integrating the AI engine behind ChatGPT into its suite of prevention tools as a beta test starting today. Its new AI coach assistant will offer users tips on preventing their specific food waste.

Leanpath will be testing the effectiveness of the new technology to help speed food waste prevention efforts.

“While generative AI is still early in its journey, we’re excited about what it can already offer in the food waste prevention space,” says Leanpath Director of Product Brennan Hogan. “We’ll continue to adapt this innovation based on customer feedback and usage.”

“Leanpath’s food waste tracking solutions help thousands of kitchens around the world understand what they’re wasting and why, but it’s what culinary teams do with that data that actually stops food waste,” says Leanpath CEO Andrew Shakman. “That’s why we have Leanpath executive chefs to help train and coach culinary teams. And that’s why we’re testing AI coach assistant as a way to supplement that human intelligence with cutting-edge technology.”

Foodservice kitchens waste 4-10% of the food they purchase before it ever reaches a plate—a massive financial, environmental and social problem. Leanpath helps culinary teams be more profitable and sustainable by cutting that waste in half.

World Food Day 2022: Agritech Serves Up Farm To Fork Revolution

World Food Day on October 16 this year presents an urgent roll-up-your-sleeves challenge as we face a global food crisis as never before. The United Nations estimates there will be 9.8 billion people on this planet by 2050. Meantime crop yields have plummeted to record lows and food prices are hitting record highs, while fallout from the pandemic, extreme weather, and geopolitical conflicts continue disrupting supply chains worldwide. Nevertheless, a committed nucleus of agribusiness startups and established leaders are innovating to feed the planet’s growing population in a healthy, sustainable manner.

Data intelligence is rock against food insecurity

Companies across the value chain in the agricultural industry are turning to data in their quest for predictability. Some food processing companies are working closely with farmers to improve operations that meet regulatory emission targets and corporate sustainability KPIs, while gaining efficiencies and increasing crop yields. Climate change imperatives are only increasing the urgency to take action.

“Traditional, experienced-based farming is not viable in today’s highly dynamic world,” said Andreas Heckmann, executive vice president and head of customer solution support and innovation at SAP. “Food processing organizations need intelligence from integrated data to increase farming efficiencies. One example is SAP Intelligent Agriculture, where agribusiness organizations including farmers and other partners, share and interpret real-time data from sensors, weather stations, and satellite imagery to better understand when to plant, irrigate, grow, and harvest crops for higher yields, cost-savings, and sustainability.”

Climate intelligence boost crop yields

Real and near real-time intelligence is fast becoming a bulwark against climate change threats. One SAP partner, a Chilean-based startup called Agranimo, collects and analyzes data from climate and soil sensors and satellite images. This intelligence is designed to help growers better forecast and increase farm yields, reduce water and fertilizer consumption, and assess climate risks. With consolidated climate and soil information, growers can improve crop management strategies, including pest and disease management, for more accurate yield forecasts, as well as environmental sustainability. For example, commercial farmers can adapt irrigation to plant needs and use less water, or act quickly to protect plants from extreme weather. Agranimo participated in the Industry 4.0 cohort of SAP.iO Foundry Berlin, the company’s global B2B accelerator.

Startups Are Key to SAP’s Sustainable Enterprise Vision

SAP has a corporate goal to drive toward Zero Emissions, Zero Waste, and Zero Inequality. It’s nurturing 75 sustainability-oriented startups through its SAP.iO Foundries accelerator, focusing on everything from food to fashion.

Food giant Dole Sunshine Company has a goal of zero fruit loss by 2025, as its products move from farms to supermarkets. That will help reduce food waste that contributes to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. So recently Dole started using artificial intelligence-powered computer vision software to help automate visual inspection of pineapples. The software, which came from a startup called Clarifruit, helped Dole reduce spoilage and double its productivity in inspecting fruit. But it only happened because enterprise powerhouse SAP, whose own software the inspection data flows into, is itself so deeply committed to sustainability and climate action.

Clarifruit is one of 75 sustainability-oriented startups that have been nurtured as part of SAP.iO Foundaries, the German software company’s global network of external startup accelerators. As part of the program, SAP first integrated Clarifruit’s inspection tool with its SAP S/4HANAsolution that sits at the heart of Dole’s production system. Then SAP introduced Clarifruit to Dole.

SAP has a corporate goal to drive toward Zero Emissions, Zero Waste, and Zero Inequality—three critical aspects of sustainable business. And the enterprise software company’s footprint in global business and manufacturing software is unparalleled, especially in corporate finance, production systems and supply chain management. About 450,000 companies use SAP, with it playing a role in 87% of the world’s total global commerce. The software company came to climate consciousness early, partly because it was founded and is headquartered in Germany, where green issues have long been of huge concern. A full decade ago, for example, SAP moved responsibility for tracking its own sustainability data to the chief financial officer, to be reported alongside financial metrics. It was one of the world’s first large companies to do so.

“When you partner with SAP you get the scale to help make the world sustainable,” says Kange Kaneene, who oversees SAP.iO’s 3 accelerators in North and Latin America. The global program has helped a total of over 400 startups in 11 locations scale their businesses. SAP.iO Foundries provide technical and go-to-market support to help startups integrate with SAP and become part of a curated ecosystem where their offerings are easily accessible to SAP customers.

How Ivaldi’s On-Demand Spare Parts Reduce Costs, Carbon, and Supply Chain Snags

Ivaldi is part of a profile series featuring startups participating in the Innovation Path at Cloud Wars Expo, that took place June 28-30 in San Francisco. Ivaldi is a software supplier that aims to streamline the spare parts market for heavy industry by sending digital files, not parts, from place to place in response to customer requirements, so they can be produced on demand.

The company says its value proposition in migrating heavy industry to digital is threefold:

  • It’s cheaper to build spare parts in exact quantities in response to customer orders than it is to maintain inventory.
  • It’s more efficient to build as needed, reducing lead times.
  • There’s less carbon emission in building products on-demand, closer to the end customer, than to ship large quantities from place to place.

“Doing on-demand production of spare parts can reduce the carbon footprint of some parts by 90% compared to ordering from a centralized warehouse across the world.”
Alaina Piland, CFO of Ivaldi
