Career And Business Advice From VC Investors And A Billion-Dollar Female Founder

PS27 Ventures, an early-stage investment firm founded by Jim Stallings, hosted the Female Founders Forum on March 4, 2022, which among the speaker line up, included a panel of venture capitalists, as well as Ellen Latham, founder of Orange Theory Fitness, an exercise franchise that hit $1 billion in sales in 2018.

There were multiple takeaways specific to entrepreneurship — from what makes a good pitch deck to how to appeal to investors. However, many of the insights were also relevant for solopreneurs who don’t intend to raise money or even in-house professionals who don’t plan to start a business.

Tailor your message

“What can you do to make it easy for the investor to preview the company? Write up the email so it embeds the top 3-5 things to see right away. Make it easy to click on your website….If you’re on a pitch night, tailor to the audience. Create a 30-second, 1-minute and 5-minute elevator pitch, plus the pitch decks. You want different formats for audiences, for an initial introduction, for detailed in-person meetings. Accommodate…” — Sallie Jian, SAP.iO New York

SAP.iO is an incubator within SAP, the software company. Jian’s advice to make it easy on the investor is transferable to any relationship you’re trying to nurturecurrent boss, prospective employer, customer, colleague or other collaborator. While Jian’s example focus on good email writing (so important!), it also applies to your LinkedIn profile (include an easy way for people to get in touch) or even email signature (include your website or LinkedIn URL so people can easily learn more about you).

Creating multiple pitch formats depending on where you are is another gem applicable to both business owners and professionals. You want to have different ways of introducing yourself (the networking pitch) because, depending on the situation, you will have more or less time and your audience will want to know or need to know different things about you. Accommodating your audience, as Jian rightly puts it, is a way of showing you understand and respond to their needs.

The tech company that claims it can stop employees from quitting

The strongest thought that abides in me is that technology can solve everything.

The second strongest thought is that technology hasn’t solved everything… yet.

Which then leads me to worry that I’ll never see the glorious day when it has.

So I was uplifted to rafters unimagined to learn there’s a tech company that’s solved a fundamental problem of corporate life: the unhappy employee.

Laugh all you will — I did — but GrowthSpace‘s tease is a tantalizing one. It insists that 97% of the people who were subject to its technology said it was “an active incentive for them to stay at their company.”

How does it do this magical thing? Well, in the company’s own words: “Say goodbye to pouring budget into training programs with unknown results. Say hello to an algorithm-powered system backed by real-world skill mapping that ensures the perfect match between employees and experts. Every time.”

How to Avoid Paying the Price for Uncertainty in 2021

An explosion of data should not scare us. It is an explosion of data processing that might be our doom. MANTA’s CEO Tomas Kratky explains how to deal with growing complexity of our data pipelines in 2021.

Not Knowing Costs Lives and Money

But that somehow seems irrelevant when we look back at 2020. It was definitely not an easy year for anyone. We, both as a community and as individuals, were tested in many different and challenging ways. Many lives were lost and even more lives were drastically impacted by COVID-19. We had to live (and we still live) with a lot of uncertainty all around us. We did not know how dangerous the virus would be, if there would be any long-term effects on our health, if / how easily we could get sick multiple times, and the list goes on. And that kind of “not knowing” sucks. Many of us decided to stay at home, limit our social interactions, and have our groceries delivered for many months to protect ourselves and the ones we love.

Verusen Debuts on Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s SDCE 100

Verusen, an innovator in artificial intelligence, materials inventory and data management technology, announced today that it has been named to the Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s SDCE 100 for 2020. The prestigious list spotlights successful and innovative projects that deliver bottom-line value to small, medium and large enterprises across the range of supply chain functions. These projects can serve as a map for supply chain executives looking for new opportunities to drive improvement in their own operations.

Verusen’s successful work with a Fortune 500 pulp and paper manufacturer with more than 60 North American facilities exemplifies the impact its AI-based intelligent technology platform can quickly make. The manufacturer set an aggressive initiative to reduce working capital by $5 million, obtain enterprise inventory visibility and rebalance inventory through a virtual maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) inventory network.

With Verusen’s cloud platform, the team laid the appropriate data foundation by structuring its material master (MM) data in weeks instead of a year. AI ultimately cleansed the MRO data, allowing the company to begin a “self-cleansing” data strategy as well as an internal “buy-from-self-first” inventory optimization strategy. Additionally, the AI delivered optimized insights on where inventory could be reduced as well as how to avoid creating excess. In less than 100 days, Verusen’s AI platform produced more than $20 million in verified savings.

Seven new Israeli startups in the consumer products industry are taking part in the second cycle of the program, launched with a virtual kickoff event on Monday.

The seven selected startups are:

  • Aiola, which developed an analytical product for CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies that integrates with consumer data from the ERP, CRM and BI systems, and creates advance analytical models using deep learning technologies.
  • Hexa, an immersive content (3D/AR) as-a-service company that converts retail partners’ existing imagery into 3D and AR assets. Hexa’s customers include Macy’s, Google, Logitech.
  • Pecan, an automated predictive analytics platform that does not require any data scientists or data science capabilities. The startup emerged from stealth mode in February, announcing a $15 million funding round led by Dell Technologies Capital and Israeli VC firm S Capital.
  • Sampler, a direct-to-consumer product sampling platform that helps brands deliver samples online and gather insights to build one-to-one relationships with consumers. The company says it works with over 300 brands including L’Oréal, Nestlé, Unilever, and Pepsi.
  • SRP, which helps connect brands, local stores, and consumers on a single Nearby Platform (NP) to boost business and create a unique direct-to-consumer sales channel (D2C). Stores in the private sector use SRP’s mobile app to manage relationships with vendors, customers, and store operations “in a way that was until recently exclusive for large retailers.”

Plum Continues to Expand Their Enterprise Customer Base, Gaining Bentley Systems as a Customer

Plum, a software-as-a-service company that provides enterprise organizations with the data they need to quantify the potential of their workforce, announced today that they acquired a new enterprise customer, Bentley Systems, the leading global provider of software solutions to engineers, architects, geospatial professionals, constructors, and owner-operators for the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, including public works, utilities, industrial plants, and digital cities.

A number of large enterprises, including Scotiabank, Deloitte, SAP, Bloomberg, and Hyundai, are using Plum to enable data-driven decision-making when it comes to their talent acquisition strategies.

Plum CEO Caitlin MacGregor says, “We are seeing success growing our customer base with enterprise companies that are focused on improving candidate experience, reducing bias in the hiring process, and helping provide efficiency in their recruitment pipeline. We’re excited to support Bentley Systems in these endeavors.” In September Plum announced a $4.2 million round of seed funding to continue to focus on their product strategy and grow their enterprise customer base.

Working in close collaboration with SAP SuccessFactors and as a SAP App Center partner, Plum provides added value to the SuccessFactors recruitment module. The SAP SuccessFactors partnership was a key factor in the decision to purchase Plum, says Bentley Systems’ Chief Talent Officer Florence Zheng. “Leveraging predictive talent data will enable Bentley Systems’ teams to be even more effective in our process and ensure that we are placing the right people in the right roles,” said Zheng. “There are a lot of great tools out there. The integration of Plum in SuccessFactors, besides the value Plum brings to the talent acquisition process, makes it a perfect choice for us.
